Alexander Dusty Road Pinot Noir

$25.00
Country / Region: Wairarapa
Varietal: Pinot Noir
Vintage: 2016

Savoury and approachable Martinborough Pinot without the premium price tag.

Alexander vineyards is just 5 hectares in size, on free-draining river terraces planted in high density rows with low trellising to ensure low yielding vines. Being Martinborough it's predominantly Pinot Noir, but also with small amounts of Merlot and Chardonnay.

Michael Finucane and Roz Walker came to New Zealand in 1996 from the UK, and planted their home vineyard the following year. They've recently experimented with higher portions of indigenous yeasts, more whole-bunches and more new oak as the vine age has got to the point of maturity.  As a result the house style has shifted towards a more full style of wine, and construction of a new winery in 2014 has meant greater quality control too.

The 'Dusty Road' is the second tier wine of the estate, but given the top wine is a "Barrel Selection" of this wine, it means great quality at a bargain price.  Produced from a blend of seven different Pinot Noir clones, 30% from the famous Abel clone. All hand picked, a small portion of whole bunch and 30% native yeasts, aged for 10 months in French oak (17% new).

Just 700 cases produced, Raymond Chan rates it  and 18.5/20... he describes it as: firm and well-concentrated with aromas of ripe dark-red berry fruit along with dark herb elements, and nutty oak unfolding subtle resinous suggestions. Medium-full bodied, the palate has sweetly rich and fulsome flavours of ripe dark-red and black berried fruits entwined with soft notes of dark herbs. The wine carries with very good power, energy and drive, leading to a very long finish of dark berry fruits with fine textural grip.
