Archer McRae Cabernet Franc

Country / Region: Hawkes Bay
Vineyard: Archer McRae
Varietal: Cabernet Franc
Vintage: 2011

Rich, rounded and elegant gamey Cabernet Franc

Winemaker Chris Archer believes Cab Franc has a unique 'X Factor' - the grape originally coming from Western France.  Considered one of the unsung heroes of the 'Bordeaux Blend' with Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon, bringing an aromatic lift to the wines along with tobacco and cedar flavours.

Chris Archer describes himself as something of a 'gypsy' winemaker- originally from Australia learning from the Tyrrells winery, Chris is now based in Wellington.  He produces small volumes of high quality wines from individually chosen rows in single vineyards that fit his high standards & seeks to express the essence of Terroir.  Each bottle features hand-painted artwork by local artist Lynne Sandri, reflecting the 'handmade' nature of the wines.

The Archer McRae Cab Franc comes from individually chosen rows from the Mills Reef 'Mere Road' vineyard in Hawkes Bay, long maceration and fermented with natural yeasts, finished with 11 months in oak (25% new).  Only 190 cases produced, and the result is a richer wine than you'd expect from straight 'Franc' - a nose of venison slathered in chocolate sauce and pungent wild flowers, silky smooth on the palate with lingering savoury gamey spice and a lively but delicate finish.

One of NZ's best Cabernet Francs, great example and made in tiny volumes.  Wineclub price including your discount is $38.25 per bottle - a small price to pay for a work of art.
