The icon wine of Lebanon, and the flagship wine of Chateau Musar

The Bekaa (or Beqaa) Valley is situated 30km East of Beirut, Lebanon's most important farming region. Once served as a major source of grain for Roman provinces.  With a Mediterranean climate.

In 1930, Gaston Hochar founded Chateau Musar, inspired by 6,000 years of winemaking history in Lebanon. His eldest son Serge Hochar studied as a civil engineer, before shifting to oeneology in Bordeaux. He spent 18 years perfecting the 'Musar' style, and became the first ever 'Man of the Year' for Decanter Magazine in 1984 for his dedication to producing superb wine throughout the bitter Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990). and an average elevation of 1,000m it also produces the best wines in Lebanon.

The top wine of the estate, the 2006 vintage was a year of great difficulty and conflict in Lebanon, and has been held back by the winery until now. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon blended with Rhone grapes Carignan and Cinsault, from old low yielding bush vines. 12 Years in French oak, bottled unfiltered and unfined. 

In their youth, Chateau Musar Reds are dense and richly-textured, with intense ‘baked fruit’ characters: plums, damsons, cranberries, cherries, figs and dates. Bordeaux grape Cabernet Sauvignon lends black fruit flavours; Rhône grapes Cinsault and Carignan contribute fragrance (violets; pepper) and supple spiciness. Either set of qualities might dominate a particular vintage, but the style is always emphatically Lebanese: enticingly aromatic, with persistent fruit flavours. 

Michael's tasting note-

Rich aromas of baked fruits, plum, black leather, figs and dates. Richly-textured, with intense ‘black cherry, cigar box, olive tapenade, violets, pepper and supple spiciness.  Gorgeously balanced wine showing complexity and aged characters without sacrificing subble fruit concentration.
