Full bodied wine to accompany the summer barbecue from Stellenbosch South Africa

Pinotage is South Africa's signature grape -- a cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsault (Cinsault was known as Hermitage in South Africa at the time) created in 1925.  A majority (over 90%) of Pinotage is still only grown in South Africa.

This wine is actually a blend - 87% Pinotage, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon

Grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks and pumped over 3 - 4 times a day. After a light pressing the Pinotage underwent malolactic fermentation before going into 50% new French oak barrels for 24 months.   14.8% alcohol.

The Kaapzicht (Cape View) Wine Estate covers 174 hectares in the Bottelary Ward in the world-famous Stellenbosch district of South Africa. The vineyards stretch over predominantly north-facing slopes on fertile granite soils with a climate that favours the cultivation of quality wine grapes.

All of the Kaapzicht and reserve Steytler wines are made from grapes grown on the property - making this a true Estate. The wines have won a multitude of accolades culminating in the the Steytler Vision 2001 winning the Trophy for Best Blended Red at the International Wine Competition in London in 2004.

Kaapzicht Estate is a family affair with almost every member of the Steytler family involved. George is the viticulturist and is responsible for all the land work and maintenance. Mandy, his wife, manages the Kaapzicht Function Centre as well as the small overnighter cottage. Danie is the winemaker and his wife Yngvild is manages the office and export sales.

Winemaker Tasting Note:

Dark purple deepening to the centre with pure Pinotage flavours bursting from the glass; layers of ripe mulberry, strawberry and plum pudding lifted by juicy balancing acidity; toasty oak vanillin and spice adds interest without overwhelming the unique grape character; deftly crafted with firm structure and balance to mature for 5 - 6 years; enjoy with air dried beef biltong or ostrich steak for the perfect South African taste.

Raymond Chan's Note (August 2013)

Very dark, near impenetrable black red colour. Tightly bound and elegant aromas of earthy, black and red berry fruits are complexed by savoury notes of tar and liquorice. Oaking is noticeable, with spice notes. Medium-full-bodied, savoury, sour earthy red and dark berry fruit flavours fill the palate. This is grainy in texture and robust in mouthfeel. Some oxidative characters merge with the savoury fruit. The wine finishes with firm acid and slightly resinous oak. Shy on bouquet, this is a robust and savoury Pinotage. It will develop over the next 4-5+ years. Stellenbosch fruit fermented to 14.88% alc., the wine aged 24 months in 50% new French oak. 17.5-/20 Aug 2013
