'Super-Classic' Chardonnay says Michael Cooper

A single site on a slope overlooking the Mate's vineyard, replanted in 2000, considered a 'Super-Classic' wine by Michael Cooper.

Reductive on the nose in its youth with plenty of struck match mingling with lean lemon lime aromas, medium-full bodied and mealy and savoury stonefruit flavours and a lingering finish. Burgundy lovers, the Hunting Hill is sometimes compared to Puligny-Montrachet in style with more pronounced minerality. This needs some cellar time to be at its best, cellar for 3-7 years.

History of Kumeu

The Brajkovich family are credited with being one of the pioneers of the New Zealand wine industry, first migrating here in 1937 from Croatia, working first in the gum fields and farming small plots of land. It wasn't until the late 1970s when they shifted away from basic hybrids and fortified wines to produce classic varietal wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay.

The mantle passed from Maté Brajkovich to son Michael in 1982, and the wines transformed with hand harvesting, improved drainage, judicious oak aging to produce more traditional styles of wine. It is Chardonnay that Kumeu has become famous for, with international acclaim and  favourable comparisons with French Burgundy.

The cream of the crop are three Single Vineyard Chardonnays, all coming from small blocks in West-Auckland with special microclimates. All are hand picked, whole bunch pressed, barrel fermented with indigenous yeasts, and 100% malolactic. Each wine enjoys unique character from their sites, a nod to the French concept of Terroir.
We have a small allocation of each of the new release 2016 vintage available on a first-in first-served basis.
