Kumeu River Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay

Country / Region: New Zealand
Vineyard: Kumeu River
Varietal: Chardonnay
Vintage: 2016

Concentrated and richly textured made for long cellaring

Named for the family patriarch Maté Brajkovich (and pronounced "Mah-Tes Vineyard") on the site of the original vineyard purchased in 1944.

The most concentrated and richly textured of the three. Sometimes compared to quality Meursault due to the creamier & broader palate weight. Another Michael Cooper Super-Classic wine.

Reserved and "unyielding" when young, will blossom with  age to exhibit lemon-curd, yellow stonefruit and brioche, toasted hazelnut and nougat. Cellar time preferably 4-10 years.

History of Kumeu

The Brajkovich family are credited with being one of the pioneers of the New Zealand wine industry, first migrating here in 1937 from Croatia, working first in the gum fields and farming small plots of land. It wasn't until the late 1970s when they shifted away from basic hybrids and fortified wines to produce classic varietal wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay.

The mantle passed from Maté Brajkovich to son Michael in 1982, and the wines transformed with hand harvesting, improved drainage, judicious oak aging to produce more traditional styles of wine. It is Chardonnay that Kumeu has become famous for, with international acclaim and  favourable comparisons with French Burgundy.

The cream of the crop are three Single Vineyard Chardonnays, all coming from small blocks in West-Auckland with special microclimates. All are hand picked, whole bunch pressed, barrel fermented with indigenous yeasts, and 100% malolactic. Each wine enjoys unique character from their sites, a nod to the French concept of Terroir.
We have a small allocation of each of the new release 2016 vintage available on a first-in first-served basis.
