Considered as one of New Zealand's finest red Bordeaux-style wines. New release 2016 releasing from the week of 5 March 2018.

Te Mata Coleraine is one of NZ's super-classic wines - arguably our most famous and collected wine.  Originally a single vineyard wine, the wine is now a blend of the oldest and finest vineyards on the hills on the Havelock Hills in Hawkes Bay.  While its own distinct style, Coleraine emulates the style of the famous Bordeaux region of Margaux.  

The 2016 growing season in Hawkes Bay was unusually dry, meaning small volumes of intensely flavoured and very ripe fruit. Made in the traditional Bordeaux winemaking style - fully destemmed with extended maceration on skins to maximise colour and intensity of both body and tannins. Matured in mostly new oak barrels for 18 months, fined and bottled.  The final blend is 51% Cabernet, 47% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc.   


The new vintage is showing a profusion of red fruit, reflecting the higher merlot contribution, but perhaps also marking an evolution of Coleraine style. Fragrant raspberry, strawberry and ripe plum, backed by savoury cedar and thyme framed by tight acidity and beautifully ripe tannins.  Always precise & elegant, and will reward patient cellaring, this vintage is showing signs of being more accessible earlier in life. Despite being a smaller vintage, thankfully the price has stayed the same. 

The new vintage is released from the winery in the week of 5 March 2018.
