Pukeora The Benches Red 2015
Bordeaux red blend from a boutique family producer in northern Hawkes Bay
The name Pukeora translates to 'hill of health'. The winery sits in the place of the old sanatorium in Hawke's Bay, close to Waipakurau, and in 2000, the north facing slope of the hill was planted with vines, as the limestone soil is ideal for growing grapes. The Benches Red is a Bordeaux style blend, only made in great vintages. This release is Merlot dominant, with a Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and even a little Syrah playing supporting roles. The wine is aged 22 months in French and American oak. Pukeora has long been one of our favourite wineries when looking at value for money, and this Benches is even better than the last release.
Dark ruby in the glass, almost purple in the centre. On the nose, blackcurrant, blue fruits, liquorice, and a big hit of sweet vanilla oak. The palate shows good concentration, with chewy tannins, dark fruits and notes of dark chocolate and peppery spice. There's no hint of under-ripe fruit, and yet the acidity is still ample. The oak is still a bit prominent, but it shows great promise for ageing. It also integrates well after being open for some time, so a good decanting can soften it out considerably. It's a bold red with big flavours, so great for the barbecue or some slow cooked meat. Drinking well now with some air, but this will just get better over the next 5-7 years.
