Tietjen Witters Verdelho
Exotic aromatic white wine made in Gisborne from a Portuguese grape.
Verdelho is a white grape originally from Portugal where it was widely planted in the 1500s, especially on the islands of Madeira and Pico. It also makes an appearance in the Douro on mainland Portugal (the region where Port comes from). Not to be confused with the Spanish grape Verdejo! Outside of Portgual it is seeing some popularity in Australia but almost nowhere else in the world.
Made in a traditional Portuguese way where it is whole bunch pressed and fermented in old oak barrels rather than the more 'new world' method of using Stainless Steel tanks. Pale yellow in color, with fresh apricot and pears on the nose along with waves of honeysuckle. On the palate there are soft notes of ripe peaches, apricots and a zingy finish, showing remarkable freshness for a barrel fermented white wine at 6 years old!
