Abel Tasman Chardonnay

Nelson is often overlooked as one of NZ's quality wine regions. There are essentially three different sub-areas to consider- 'The Plains' close to Richmond, the coastal area near Ruby Bay and towards Motueka, and 'The Hills' including the Upper Moutere.

The Upper Moutere Valley and Mapua share a uniquely ancient, brown, clay-bound gravel known as the 'Moutere Gravels'. It is these soils that contributed to the fame of the epic Chardonnays from the stalwart of this sub-region: Neudorf.

Not far down the road, Sophie and Mark McGill have wine in their blood- Sophie's parents worked with Cloudy Bay before co-establishing Dog Point, Mark's dad similarly has a 40 year history in the industry. Their 5 hectare block is planted exclusively in Chardonnay, along with an apple orchard for making cider.

The Chardonnay is handpicked from estate fruit grown in the Nelson hills, gently pressed to French oak cuves. Fermentation is spontaneous from natural yeasts, spending around a year on lees, and malolactic fermentation typically completing the following spring.

Tasting Notes - Cameron Douglas, Master Sommelier:

"Complex, flinty, fresh wood spice and ripe white orchard fruits laced with grapefruit, lees residue scents and a vibrant youthful, lactic new yoghurt appeal.  On the palate - delicious, fresh, highly textured and dry.  Flavours of citrus then tree fruit followed by white stone fruit.  A grapefruit flesh and pith attribute is strong leads the core flavour and into a lengthy finish.  Youthful and quite delicious, a lengthy finish.  Well made.  Great drinking from January 2021 through 2025."  94 points.  Excellent.
