Aperol is a bittersweet Italian aperitif, which alongside Campari, perhaps the most popular in Italy. It was created in 1919 on the occasion of the Padova Exhibition, and originally produced by the Padua-based Fratelli Barbieri company. Aperol introduced the revolutionary idea of an aperitif with an alcohol content of only 11%, yet only took off in Italy after World War II. Today, it is produced by Gruppo Campari and enjoyed by over 3.4 million Italians.
