Argiano Solengo

The Solengo is one of the coveted 'Super Tuscan' wines. Produced by the famous Argiano Winery in Montalcino, but from grapes associated with the Bordeaux wine region in France means it falls outside the strict classification system of wines in the region, so technically this falls into the almost generic 'Rosso Toscano IGT' classification.  Make no mistake though, this is an intense and powerful Cabernet that sits alongside top Bordeaux in quality.

Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese.

Varieties were fermented separately, with about 20 days on the skins. Malolactic fermentation occurred naturally in cement tanks. Aged 18 months in French barrique made specially for this wine. 60% new and 40% second-use.

Argiano traces its history back to 1580, and named after a legendary temple to Janus built in Etruscan times in the 8th century BCE.  Janus is usually shown with two faces, one looking back at history, and one into the future. Likewise Argiano retains the long history and traditions of the region in Montalcino but with a firm eye on the future - modern quality winemaking with a focus on wines of power and complexity that will reward careful cellaring.

We opened this wine for a recent focus on Central Italian wines in shop, and impressed with its power and intensity of flavour. It is dominated by bold tannins and quality new oak at the moment, if opening any time soon we recommend decanting for a minimum of two hours, but even better tuck it away and enjoy on a special occasion.

Reviews
JS95 James Suckling

This is really dense and structured, yet there’s energy and agility throughout. Full-bodied, yet agile and firm. It’s nicely composed and framed. Shows a lot of texture and precision for the vintage. Some balsamic to the cherry and chocolate flavors. Give it two or three years to come together. Better after 2022.

WS93 Wine Spectator
A beam of pure blackberry, black currant, iron and earth flavors are accented by vanilla and coconut from the new oak. This red is dense, with nervous tannins that eventually dissolve into the fruit. Decant now and serve with a juicy, grilled steak or lamb chops, or wait 5 years. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Sangiovese. Best from 2024 through 2040.
