Cave de Tain Cornas 'Arenes Sauvage'
Very fine 'plot selection' from the steep hillside of Cornas, Northern Rhone
Cornas is a jewel in the crown of the Northern Rhone wine region. Actually a smaller appellation than the more famous 'Hermitage' - Cornas is a natural amphitheater, a single facing slope with steep granite terraces. The contour of the hill protects the vines from the cold Mistral winds, and ensures a unique microclimate - the hottest of the Rhone meaning a high level of ripeness and powerful small berries on the vines.
The "Arenes Sauvage" (wild arena) is picked from selected old vines from the best vineyards in the appellation - matured in 100% new oak - full bodied and very concentrated. Inky purple-black right to the rim, aromas of black olive, venison, and with touch of char unsurprising given the use of 100% new oak. Concentrated savoury black berries, cocoa, black cherry, thyme and black pepper leading to long and supple fine tannins.
Drinking wonderfully now, but will cellar happily for another 10+ years.
