Clos Henri Sauvignon Blanc
We all know that Marlborough is ground-central for Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand, perhaps the world. Much of it is mass-produced and made to a successful export formula, those who frown upon this style often call it "Cats Pee on a Gooseberry Bush". There is however a different class of Sav too.
The Bourgeois family knows about Sauvignon - with 10 generations of growing Sauvignon Blanc in the spiritual home of the grape - Sancerre in the Loire Valley of France. They have exported their European style here to Marlborough - high density planting, double guyot pruned, low yielding vines.
Even the drive up to the quaint chapel turned cellar door is a lesson in the French concept of Terroir. On either side of the driveway are two different soil types. On one side is the classic Greywacke river gravels, planted in Sauvignon. On the other is Broadridge Clay where the Pinot Noir is grown.
The Bourgeois family have exported their European style here to Marlborough - their low yielding vines produce 60% less fruit than Marlborough's average. Certified Organic since 2013, dry farming (without irrigation) and adhering to Biodynamic principles, bringing an old world authenticity to the wines.
Clos Henri makes three different Sauvignon Blancs, today we are tasting the flagship wine of the estate. Low yield combined with partial barrel fermentation and lees aging brings texture, length, and complexity to the wine.
"An elegant and restrained wine, the delicate nose unfolds to reveal flint, white peach and fresh lemon zest. Fleshy, white stone fruits and extended lees ageing imbue the palate with a richness, while the core minerality leaves a precise and focused finish."
