d'Arenberg Dead Arm Shiraz
Iconic Aussie Shiraz. Located in McLaren Vale, the d'Arenberg estate was established in the early 20th century. They produce a very large range of wines, from easy drinking and simple to serious and complex, which will happily rest in your cellar for 15 years or more.
This cuvée is named after the Dead Arm disease, affecting vines randomly all over the world. As shown on the picture, one side of the vine slowly turn into dry wood. Yields are then reduced, but the positive effect is that all the nutrients go to the side still alive which will produce fruit of great intensity.
Winemaking wise, the d'Arenberg estate is very traditional. For the Dead Arm cuvée, small batches of grapes ferment individually, they are basket pressed, and remain separate until final blending. That way, any "unworthy" batch can be put aside to be blended in a lower quality cuvée.
100% Shiraz. The wine has great concentration showing aromas of dark cherries, prune, raspberry jam as well as delicate notes of rosemary and violets. On the palate, chewy tannins and refreshing acidity balance the full body of that wine.
To drink now with a Sunday roast, or to keep in your cellar for another decade!
