Dom Clape Cornas
"Clape was one of a pantheon of midcentury winegrowers in the northern Rhone whose wines, though made initially for the local market, were eventually celebrated internationally as among the most profound expressions of the syrah grape. It was Mr. Clape’s wines, with their chewy textures and savory, smoky flavors, that compelled people to take tiny Cornas seriously" - Eric Asimov writing for the New York Times
This is a powerful wine, with scents of licorice, olive, black berries, and incense. Hints of smoke and minerality in the background draw you in. The palate starts with fleshy spiced plum, moving to toffee like tannins in the finish. Augustus Clape was known for making the best expressions of the Syrah grape, and this is not an exception. Earth and smoke compliment the berry and olive tones, making a truely elegant wine, one of the best from the northern Rhone.
2006 was a good year, producing a more fruit forward harvest and a bonny freshness. However the 16 years of age will have allowed the earthy undertones to take center-stage, while the black berry fruit compliments beautifully.
