Don David Tannat
Argentinian Tannat -- good for the heart and the tastebuds!
Tannat is often a component of wines made in South-West France, particularly in the Cahors AC and Madiran AC. This Tannat comes from the foothills of the Andes in the Cafayate region around Salta in Northwest Argentina. The vineyards are planted at 1,700 metres making them the highest commercial sites in the world. Cool climate plays a key part with great variations between night and day time temperatures, slowing down the ripening cycle and ensuring the development of good varietal character.
Now doctor's are calling Tannat 'heart healthy wine' due to exceptional levels of phenolic compounds which are found in the Tannat grape, most always in levels that are significantly higher than other red wines. This produces greater anti-oxidants within the wine which scientific studies say it is good for you. If you needed an excuse to drink this wine, there it is.
Rich inviting aromas of dark chocolate and coffee form a bold nose. The palate is lightly chalky with good acidity, and has flavours of blackberries and a touch of plum skin. This is a medium to full bodied wine with good mouth feel and medium length. There are fine chalky tannins with a mineral edge, and a savoury finish. This wine has enough oomph that it would be a perfect match for a grilled steak, but isn't too heavy for summer evenings - a great, balanced red wine and fantastic value for money.
