Elena Walch Lagrein
Lagrein's home turf is in Northern-Central Italy province of Alto Adige. The region is more widely known for dry white wines being cooler and close to the Dolomite mountains. Lagrein is an ancient grape though, and thrives in these conditions where it produces deeply coloured wines featuring crisp acidity and brooding cherry and spicy sour plum flavours.
Run by the matriarch Elena Walch, and her two daughters Julia and Caroline in the picturesque Dolomite mountains, Elena Walch centres around the famous Castel Ringberg vineyard, which ‘rings’ 1620 Habsburg castle. With superb cool climate conditions, the steep, sunny slopes of dolomite rock with loose reddish limestone create a unique terroir.
Winemakers Notes-
The Lagrein Elena Walch gleams invitingly with its intensive and dense garnet red colour. After ageing in French oak barrels and Slavonian oak barrels, the complex bouquet captivates discreet spicy aromas, and cocoa, with wild berries and sweet cherries in the background. Distinctive tannin structure and smooth fullness give it a playful yet rustic elegance and youthful freshness as well as a long, juicy finish.
