Gran Sasso Montepulciano D'Abruzzo Alta Quota
Montepulciano is the second most grown grape in Italy (behind Sangiovese), and by far the most abundant in the hills surrounding the old city of Cheti in the region of Abruzzo. A major wine region of roughly 9,000 hectares, producing 86 million litres of wine per year.
The grape is named after a stunning town in Tuscany by the same name, yet confusingly Montepulciano town does not produce wine from this grape, instead famous for 'Vino Nobile de Montepucilano' made from Sangiovese!
Tasting Note
This wine has plenty of juicy dark fruit, really fresh and vibrant with ripe yet persistent Italianate tannins with requisite cleansing acidity. Deep purple in colour, lovely succulent wine with plush reds fruits and silky smooth tannins. It is clean, fresh and plummy on the nose, rich, supple and accessible on the palate.
Gran Sasso is part of Gruppo Farnese, an important, quality-minded Italian wine producer, based in Ortona, Abruzzo with the mission of giving value to the indigenous grapes of the region. Gruppo Farnese was founded in 1994 by Valentino Sciotti (commercial director), Camillo De Iuliis (previously general director, who passed away in 2017) and Filippo BaccalaroRegion
