Greywacke Pinot Gris
Textural Pinot Gris from Kevin Judd
Pinot Gris is the fastest growing varietal in NZ, and is proving itself a versatile grape, ranging from bone dry and minerally to rich and honeyed. Kevin Judd, owner and winemaker at Greywacke, spent over 20 years as the winemaker of Cloudy Bay, and in some ways was responsible for putting Marlborough on the map for wine. Now going out on his own, Greywacke has allowed him to make less typical wines, and do some exciting things with 'hands-off' winemaking. The Greywacke Pinot Gris is the perfect example of this, with a large portion fermented in old oak, using the natural yeasts present on the skins of the grapes themselves. It then sat on lees for 5 months, and the resulting wine has depth and complexity, but retains a balance of fruit.
Bright gold colour in the glass. On the nose, white stonefruits, white florals, lemon peel and flinty characters, with a hint of spice. Rich and concentrated on the palate, plenty of fruit, but also a mealy, biscuity character. Freshens up on the back palate, giving a little spice and a nuttiness to the finish.
