Gusano Mezcal Rojo
Mezcal Gusano Rojo is the oldest distillate in Mexico and one of the most universal beverages. The name "Gusano Rojo" comes from the worm that grows in the same agave and, in Oaxaca, they consider it as a delicacy with aphrodisiac properties.
According to the legend, in ancient times, the worm was used to control quality. If the mezcal had the desired quality, the worm was preserved. On the other hand, if the quality was lower than expected, it would disintegrate. Of course, today's quality control is achieved through other processes and it is no longer necessary to use the worm, but it has remained to this day as a universal symbol. Following the tradition, the worm can (or should) be taken by the one who drinks the last drink of the bottle.
The origin of Mezcal Gusano Rojo goes back more than 50 years ago, when Don Jacobo Lozano Páez detected the need to create a different and recognizable mezcal in the whole world. For this, he used all his experience in the elaboration of liquors and the result was this Mezcal Gusano Rojo , admired and sold everywhere.
Please note that the bottle contains a (long-deceased) worm.
