Kanonkop Kadette Cape Blend

Tasting Note

The 'Kadette Cape Blend' is a 37% Pinotage, 36% Cabernet Sauvigon, 25% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, and matured for 12-14 months in French oak.

Fragrant nose of dried strawberry, milk chocolate and spring flowers. Medium bodied, smooth yet savoury, with blackberry, and just a touch of charred wood, and mocha and gunsmoke on the finish.

South Africa is firmly considered in the 'New World' of wine producers, but has a longer wine history than you might thing. First grape vines were planted in the 1600s near what became Capetown. This was part of a supply station for Dutch East India Trade Company for ships travelling to the far east.

Most early European settlers clustered close to the coast The 'Western Cape' remains the epicentre of South African wine production, with cool sea breezes moderating the harsh conditions of the velt inland. The region of Stellenbosch also is the birthplace of South Africa's hallmark grape- Pinotage. This is a man-made crossbreed between French grapes Pinot Noir and Cinsault. The latter used be known as 'Hermitage' ... thus the portmanteau name.

Kanonkop literally translates from Afrikaans to 'Canon Hill'. The canon was not used for defense, rather it was fired to announce the arrival of sailing ships entering Table Bay - it signalled to the local farmers to load up their supplies for the 50km trip into the port to barter their goods.

Winery notes (2017 Vintage)
"The wine has a deep ruby, red colour. It shows ripe raspberries, black currant and mocha flavours on the nose and has dark chocolate and blackberry fruit on the palate. This wine has good length with a dry finish and can mature for a further 7-8 years."

Kanonkop Kadette Cape Blend comes from old vines over 65 years old. They are cultivated as shrub vines; a traditional practice that is used to make the most of the sunlight and regulate growth. They also use the most innovative techniques to guarantee the optimum levels of sugar, acid and PH throughout the entire life cycle. The whole process is carefully monitored and culminates in harvesting at the optimum point of ripeness.
