Kely Estate Merlot
Karikari Estate is situated in Northland, one of NZ's smallest but ironically the oldest wine region in NZ. The first vines in NZ were established by Samuel Marsden in 1819, a good 30 years before missionaries introduced grapes to Hawkes Bay.
Northland crushes about 130 tons of grapes compared to 250,000 tons in Marlborough. Wet mild winters and humid summers coupled with less than ideal soils make grape growing a challenge here - especially rot and mildew.
100% Merlot from Northland vineyards, hand picked, aged in oak puncheons.
Classical Merlot nose with brooding red and black plums on the nose, and a whiff of fresh leather. Medium bodied, with good length and structure through the mid palate and savoury but ripe dry tannins. Easily a doppelganger for a decent Hawkes Bay example.
