Kerpen 'Handpicked' Mosel Riesling
Fresh, floral and lime in this medium sweet Riesling from Mosel Germany.
100% Riesling, 'Qualitatswein' (a middle quality standard in Germany), picked by hand, gently pressed and fermented in old wooden casks.
Aromas of pineapple, mango, daphne blossom. Flavours of green apple and lemon juice, a wave of sweetness with a surprisingly savoury musky finish. Low alcohol at just 10.5% too.
Riesling - without doubt one of the most respected and regal white grapes in the world - and virtually synonymous with the quality German wine industry. It is also one of the few non-French grapes widely grown in New Zealand.
The Mosel (German) or Moselle (French) River draws from the Vosges Mountains in France meanders North where it becomes the border between Luxembourg and Germany, merging with the Saar River and eventually combining with the larger Rhine River.
In the heart of the Mosel wine region is sidles past some of the most outrageously steep vineyards in the world. As a result it is a wine area in decline, due to the high costs of working the slopes - it requires 5+ times the manhours to maintain relative to flat vineyards.
Kerpen has flourished in the Bernkastel district producing wines for around 250 years, over 8 generations of the Kerpen family. They make just Riesling, though several different wines from individual sites and quality levels - all grown on the famous slate soils.
