Lime Hill Chardonnay
Lime Hill is a new project for Karl in tandem with talented winemaker Raphael Burki. Together they discovered a very small plot of land North-East of Masterton on an limestone crest - with soils and micro-climate almost identical to some of the best in Burgundy. The 1.3 hectare site is planted 0.9ha in Pinot Noir, and a miniscule 0.4ha in Chardonnay. The wines are produced in a clear Burgundian style, to emulate the fabulous Puligny-Montrachet.
Karl Johner is well known in NZ's wine industry, having formed Johner Estate in Gladstone Wairarapa in 2001 - spending half his time here in NZ and the other half in his native Germany where he produces a range of quality wines between Freiburg and the French border.
Predominantly Mendoza clone, closely planted on limestone with a thin layer of clay topsoil. Barrel fermented, aged in fine French oak for 10 months (40% new) with further aging on full lees in tank and full Malolactic fermentation.
The wine is promising from the first sniff: intense yet elegant aromas of golden apples, fresh jackfruit, lime juice, vanilla and nougat.
The palate has a fresh medium body, creamy but not buttery, with a good balance between golden fruits and toast, nuttiness from the oak.
