Man O War Dreadnought Syrah
Powerful and lush Waiheke Island Syrah
Man o War is an icon of Waiheke Island. Their black label wines are their flagship wines that year-on-year deliver amazing wines even in the worst of conditions.
The Dreadnought Syrah is named after the first in a line of 20th century battleships which was bestowed with the motto 'fear god and dread nought' and embodied a supreme combination of speed and power. It comes from steep hillside vineyards and is carefully hand harvested before delivery to the winery. The fruit is put across a sorting table before being de stemmed and delivered to open vats for fermentation. Following a 4 day soak the Syrah is allowed to ferment with wild yeasts with plunging carried out twice daily. Following an extended time on skins (average 28 days in vat) the wines are gently pressed and taken straight to barrel for natural malolactic fermentation in the spring. The wines are racked once to a blend the following year before further maturing in tank for 3 months prior to bottling with a coarse filtration.
Dreadnought 2015 reflects the growing season with very small crops of intensely
flavoured fruit in the cherry/tayberry spectrum with liquorice characters from stem influence. The fruit and stem tannins are fine grained and ripe adding freshness and length to the wine, with the overall structure suggesting classical Northern Rhone Syrah. Stylish and finely balanced this wine is beautiful now and will benefit from ‘splashy’ decanting prior to drinking upon release.
