Obsidian Estate Tempranillo
Obsidian is a small producer on the weathered rock soils of Onetangi. Waiheke has a unique climate and soil profile in NZ - significantly warmer and drier than nearby Auckland with coastal breezes to keep the vines healthy.
Complete with outdoor 'Cabana' style tasting area alfresco tucked in an ampitheatre of hills covered in vines. The region is most famous for their Bordeaux-style wines, with Cabernet and Merlot widely planted. Somewhat unique in the region is Tempranillo.
Firmly entrenched as Spain's number one red grape, Tempranillo forms the backbone of the famous wines of Rioja and other prestigious wines of Northern Spain. Medium-full bodied, typically features dark cherry fruits coupled with dusty leather and spice. Often it appeals to the more adventurous Pinot Noir drinkers.
Made from 100% Tempranillo, aged in a combination of French and American oak (just like the Spaniards do), and with some extra bottle age too.
Curious aromas of red cherry, turmeric, and just a hint of smoked wood, light-medium bodied, with a freshness that gives way to restrained red fruit melded to an earthy savoury finish with fine spicy tannins to finish.
