Osawa 'Prestige Collection' Cabernet Merlot 2013
Taizo Osawa is a Japanese Engineer who fell in love with the Hawkes Bay region and their wines, and negotiated to buy a 100 acre block from Craggy Range. The single site sits on a river terrace in the beautiful Mangatahi Valley, alongside the same Ngaruroro River that defines the Gimblett Gravels.
In 2013 Hawkes Bay experienced their worst drought in 70 years. This stresses grape vines, and produced small berries with thick skins and superb ripeness (even the tricky Cabernet!). This means superb red wines, lush, ripe, and smooth tannins.
The 'Prestige Collection' is the upper echelon of the Osawa wines, and the 2013 vintage is a 50/50 mix of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Inoculated for fermentation using traditional Bordeaux yeast. Aged for 20 months in 65% new french oak barrels.
Deep crimson in colour, abundant nose of black currant, cassis, tobacco and cigar box characters, while the palate is elegant and full, rich and velvety tannins with excellent balance.
