Vinedos Marchigue is a large family producer, with over 2600 hectares of vines planted in Colchagua and Maule Valleys, the Panul wines coming from 110 hectares on a row of hills growing organic grapes, making un-oaked and unpretentious wines.
Fragrant boysenberry and blueberries and sweet florals, medium bodied, smooth and slightly smoky with a pleasing chalky finish.
The number to remember with Chile is 80%. 'Central Valley' region produces 80% of Chile's wine- a combination of several sub-regions stretching 400km South from Santiago. 80% of Chilean wine is dominated by just four very large producers. 80% of Chilean wine is exported abroad, and over 80% of wine produced has a 'DO' status- like the European appellation systems that delineate geographical areas.
Chile's national grape is Carmenere, originally from the Bordeaux wine region - some speculating that it is the grandfather of both Cabernet and Merlot. It is largely extinct in France, Chile's plantings cover some 9,000 hectares compared to just 4 hectares in Bordeaux. This was largely by accident, for 150 years it was mistaken for Merlot. It is also being widely planted in China under the name Cabernet Gernischt.
