Paulo Bea Sagrantino di Montefalco Secco Pagliaro

Paolo Bea is a quintessential artisanal producer steeped in the traditions of the Montefalco, which date back to the early part of the 12th century. He currently remains the guiding force behind the production of his estate, sharing his traditional, noninterventionist approach with his two sons—Giuseppe, who farms the vineyards, and Giampiero, who assists in the vinification. Each bottle provides an indication of the total produced that year, and many feature a slight presence of sediment, demonstrating the wholly natural methods of production.

The entire property encompasses 15 hectares: 5 of which are dedicated to the vineyards, 2 to olives, and the remainder to the fruits, vegetables and grains that are grown. Sagrantino is the predominant grape, covering 60% of the vineyard surface. The remaining 40% is planted to Sangiovese and Montepulciano, with a small parcel planted to several white varieties. The vineyards are cultivated organically, all grapes are harvested manually and all wines are bottled without fining or filtration.

While Sangiovese is the most prolific of the Umbrian varietals, Umbria’s identity is intimately connected to Sagrantino, a grape that has enjoyed premier positioning in Umbria for centuries, conducting an extensive and noted history as a passito wine.

Bea's signature Sagrantino Pagliaro glows a deep, dark purple hue, and exudes a full, powerful nose of slightly raisined dark berries, dark chocolate, earth, and smoky minerals. Spicy notes stud its lively palate of blackberry, currants, cinnamon, and clove--it’s a seductive wine that simply does not quit. Intense yet finessed, Bea’s ’09 Sagrantino Pagliaro feels wonderfully smooth with tannins that are at once fine-grained and firm; enjoyable now, this wine will age for years to come. The jewel in the crown of Umbria, this wine is a mono-varietal Sagrantino that macerates for an incredible 48 days; the wine ages in stainless steel for one year, two years in barrels, followed by a year in bottle.
