Perfect Pair - New Zealand Pinot Noir

A pair of two premium New Zealand Pinot Noirs - pre-aged and ready to drink!

Martinborough and Central Otago often face off for bragging rights on who produces the greatest Pinot Noir. The Martinborough style boasts more earthy, mushroom funk and lean fine tannins, where the 'Central' versions have bolder fruit, more savoury herbs and spice. We also have a tendency to drink our Pinot too young, good quality examples are usually reaching their peak at 5-8 years old.

Try one of each - compare & contrast!

Tiwaiwaka Wines is a family business, Run by husband and wife team Morton and Elise Anderson.

From grape growing to pouring a tasting glass at cellar door and everything in between, Morton and Elise do it all.

After spending 5 years in the South Australian wine industry Mort and Elise moved back to New Zealand, and to Martinborough.  Here they purchased a 5-acre vineyard and winery in August 2002.  Tiwaiwaka’s first vintage came to fruition 2003, as winemaking begun in earnest.

With the 2019 Vintage underway, Morton and Elise have nurtured the grapes in their own vineyard (and manage 2 others) and put their hands to the entire winemaking process, grape growing to bottling and labelling ready for sales.

Tasting Note

100% Pinot Noir from a selection of the vineyards older vines. Medium ruby color with a garnet rim, showing primary aromas of ripe, savory red berries, red plum and cherry. At six years old, this wine is showing pronounced secondary of aromas of forest floor, mushroom, and game. A lively and firm wine showing everything you would expect from an aged Martinborough Pinot Noir.

Desert Heart Estate began in 1999 as the dream of Denny and Jane realizing our aspirations of living and developing a vineyard and wine business on the celebrated Felton Road, Bannockburn in Central Otago.

The name Desert Heart was chosen to pay tribute to the land, because Pinot Noir, more than any other grape reflects where it is grown, and to the historical reference to the name of Bannockburn, "Heart of the Desert", from the gold rush era and due to its atypical climatic conditions. Bannockburn has a climate of extremes with long hot dry summers and harsh cold winters. Rainfall is minimal bordering on desert conditions which makes for superlative growing conditions for our award winning Pinot Noir grapes.

Tasting Note

Pure Central Otago, the Desert Heart Pinot Noir displays attractive complex aromas of savoury red berry fruits entwined with dark herbs, lifted red florals and nuances of rose petal.  The palate flavours echos the nose with concentrated rich berries and plums, silky tannins, and a persistent finish.  We often drink our wines too young. This one has been pre-aged for you and is looking beautiful now.

Winemaker Notes

Desert Heart wines are not just made, but are created by an unyielding and impassioned focus on quality and attention to detail in all facets of the winemaking process that allows our vineyards to express their true capabilities.

Our philosophy is to let the fruit speak for itself, and in keeping with the romance inherent in our wine, this involves minimal intervention from the vine to the bottle, and is integral to our practice, with the low yields allowing the wines to communicate our site and terroir.

At harvest the grapes are hand-picked, clone by clone as the soil types allow the grapes to attain optimum physiological ripeness and deliver the purest possible reflection of our vineyard's unique characteristics.
