Stanley Estate Lagrein
New to Wineseeker, Stanley Estate lies in the Awatere Valley of Southern Marlborough.
Lagrein is a grape rarely found outside its natural home in the Alto Adige region of Northern Italy - here it is the dominant red grape in an area better known for white wines. Some examples can come across similar to Cabernet, full & spicy, others more like a fleshy Syrah.
Stanley Estate's version is a quality fruit driven wine, with a palate of Black morello cherries, red plums, hints of licorice, tobacco, leather and vanilla. Soft on the nose, the effect of the oak maturation is subtle but noticeable, giving the wine balance, depth and structure with strong silky tannins and a spicy finish. It has a rich full crimson red colour, medium to full bodied.
Vinification: After de-stemming, the fruit was fermented with its natural yeast in a stainless fermenter to dryness, inoculated near the end to ensure complete dryness. The wine was then racked off and the grapes pressed off to french oak barriques, 10% new oak was used, 100% of the wine went through malolactic fermentation. The wine developed over the next 10 months with occasional batonage, giving a real depth of flavour, texture and palate weight to the wine. Only 346 cases made after the loss of 2 barrels worth in the Kaikoura Earthquake.
