Stonecroft Reserve Syrah

Winemaker Notes

Stonecroft has the oldest Syrah vines in New Zealand. These vines were rescued by the founder of Stoncroft, Dr. Alan Limmer, from the Te Kauwhata Research station and planted at Stonecroft in 1984. We still have the original row of vines and fruit from some of these vines is used in our Reserve Syrah. This is our flagship wine.

Rating:   5 stars

95 points. Dense, elegant syrah with plum, dark berry, black pepper, anise and nutty oak flavours. A backbone of firm, ripe tannins is balanced by a core of fruit sweetness. A powerful, linear red that has a promising future. 24/2/2020

Certified organic, the very ageworthy 2018 vintage (5*) was hand-picked from vines planted at Roys Hill in 1984 and matured for over 18 months in French oak barriques (30 per cent new). Deeply coloured, it is perfumed and vibrantly fruity, with concentrated blackcurrant and spice flavours, showing good complexity, fresh acidity and fine, supple tannins. It needs time; open 2023+. This wine is a Super Classic.

Dark spices of clove and vanilla from toasty French oak then crushed gravel soils . On the palate - firm textures from ripe abundant tannins, medium++ acidity and a forceful core of ripe red berry fruits. Complex and seductive, fresh and vibrant, balanced, youthful and well made.
