'Zin' is a grape that prefers the hot and even conditions of South-Eastern Italy (where it goes by Primitivo) and its more modern home in California. This version is produced by Stonecroft in the Gimblett Gravels of Hawkes Bay.
Possibly New Zealand's only Zinfandel, produced from the oldest Zin vines in New Zealand. Just six rows of vines planted in 1993 from cuttings originating in Ravenswood California. Matured for 14 months in seasoned American oak.
Sam Kim rates it 90 points/ 4.5 stars: An elegant rendition; the complex bouquet shows spiced plum, stewed strawberry, thyme, violet and nutmeg characters with hints of game and anise. It is refined and succulent on the palate, delivering sweet fruit notes together with rich savoury nuances, backed by fine, chalky tannins, leading to a lengthy sturdy finish. At its best: now to 2021. Certified organic.
