Tua Marina Arneis
We have here something quite unique - a small batch and hand crafted wine made from the Italian grape 'Arneis'. This creation owes its existence to viticulturists and winemakers Franzi Grab and Lex Thomson, where they grow organically produced grapes for nearby Framingham in Marlborough. While travelling in Italy they were impressed by the quality of the local Arneis wines in Piedmont, and on their return home to Marlborough set about cultivating the grape.
Nicknamed the 'Little Rascal' - Arneis is a tough grape to grow. It produces very small amounts of fruit per vine, and is susceptible to powdery mildew. In fact it almost went extinct in its native Italy in the 1960s. When done well it is stunning- pears, apricots, hazelnuts and more.
The Arneis was hand-picked on 10th April 2016 having reached a sugar level of 22.1 Brix and ripe orange juice like flavours with a note of hay. The grapes were whole bunch pressed and fermented with wild yeasts. 50% was fermented in a small stainless tank to retain the fresh fruit flavours, 50% in seasoned oak barrels with lees stirring. No additions apart from sulphur were made.
Wonderful fruit purity with elegant savoury nuances. Delicate aromas of apricot, lemon peel, jasmine and almond characters. Medium-full bodied with a finely textured and linear palate and good weight. Dry with a concentrated, lingering and nutty finish typical of Arneis.
