Vin Alto Retico Riserva

Country / Region: New Zealand
Vineyard: Vin Alto
Vintage: 2006

Unique Montepulciano-based NZ blend made in the Amarone style

Clevedon is a small but well-regarded winemaking region south of Auckland, and Vin Alto has been growing grapes there since 1996. Enzo Bettio, an Italian immigrant dreamed of his ancestral grape varietals succeeding in New Zealand; he was a pioneer of Italian varietals when he planted, and the release of some impressive wines has brought that to fruition, as well as the adoption of the Montepulciano, Glera and Sangiovese grapes elsewhere around the country.

The Retico Riserva is Montepulciano dominant, with a portion of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, French grapes that have a long history in Italy, particularly in the north, and as 'Super Tuscan' wines. It is not only Italian inspired in its varietal choices, but it employs a winemaking technique almost unique to the Valpolicella area in Northern Italy. Made in the Amarone style, the grapes for the Retico Riserva are dried in trays for up to 2 months to shrivel the berries and concentrate the juice before the wine is made, and then aged 2 years in oak barriques, creating a full bodied red with plenty of structure, ripe tannins and complex secondary characters.
