Irache Navarra Roble
The 'Roble' from Irache is technically a Crianza in quality, but not labeled as such. The '1891' label celebrates the establishment of the family owned winery separate from the Irache Monastery next door. It differs from the red labeled Crianza in two main ways- the blue labeled Roble is 100% Tempranillo and has 6 months of French oak maturation, while the red label Crianza is a Tempranillo blend matured in American oak for 12 months.
This wine feels more savoury than the red label, with black fruit, green herbs, and marzipan. If you like them leaner and tart, choose this blue labeled Roble, if you prefer lush and fruity go for the red labeled Crianza.
Navarra is a region located immediately East of the more famous Rioja wine region in Northern Spain. The wines have their own protected 'Denominación de Origen Protegida' (appellation), grown on the lower slopes of the Pyrenees mountains towards the Ebro river. Originally most famous for their Rosé wines they have become progressively better known for their rich reds that echo Rioja in style (but at a lower price point).
